RASE and Innovation for Agriculture (IfA) have announced the appointment of new Chief Executive Andrew Lazenby. He brings 20 years’ experience in farming, food and retail, including strategic roles spanning four continents: UK, Europe, US, Africa and Australia.
For the last two years as Director of Operations at Farmcare (the farming business owned by the Wellcome Trust), Andrew was strategic lead for operations over the business’ 17,500 hectares on 11 principle farms from Scotland to Kent, Hereford to Norfolk.
In his previous role (2011 – 2015) as Head of Commercial for Leckford Estate – The Waitrose Farm, which encompasses 15 business units across a 1,800 hectare estate in Hampshire – Andrew led an initiative to design and install a rapeseed oil factory. Within two years, this was producing 1 million bottles of oil per annum. During this time Andrew was also Vice Chairman of Hampshire Fare, the UKs largest local and regional food marketing organization.
Commenting on his new position, Andrew said: ‘’I’m very excited to be joining the RASE and IfA in an era which will be recorded as the biggest period of change in UK Farming for 80 years. There are huge opportunities in every aspect of farming practice, from future technologies including robotics and automation to widespread adoption of big data.
“Combined with the soil restorative benefits of mixed farming and likely enforced reductions agrochemical use, this is truly a time of significant opportunities.
“I see Innovation for Agriculture and its partner societies as the best placed educator, commentator and influencer in the sector. The opportunity to help shape the future in UK Agriculture, which is unique in its structure and mix of primary farming and corporate, social, wildlife and scientific elements, really is once in a lifetime.’’

Andrew holds a Degree in Agriculture, Marketing and Business from Harper Adams University and a post-graduate diploma in strategic marketing from the University of Hull.
Andrew Joins the RASE / IFA from Farmcare, the farming business owned by the Wellcome Trust where he was Director of Operations responsible for the operation, safety and commercial activity on the 17,500 ha farmed across the UK on 11 estates.
Andrew has had a varied career in the Food and Farming sectors and has latterly worked for Waitrose, the only UK retailer to own its own farming business, as a member of the senior management team running Leckford estate, an 1800 ha multimodal farming business in Hampshire.
Andrew is married and has a baby daughter Emily. The family home is an upland farmhouse in the Derbyshire Peak District National Park.
