Great British Beef Week, the popular national event celebrating Red Tractor Assured British beef, continues for its 12th year this April with farmers, processors, supermarkets, butchers, farm shops, pubs and restaurants uniting together to celebrate the UK’s most iconic meat.

Kicking off on St George’s Day April 23rd, the weeklong celebration is perfectly timed to conclude with the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, with consumers making the most of the long weekend with friends and family, firing up the barbecue or trying out new beef recipes.

Great British Beef Week (GBBW) is the brainchild of Ladies in Beef, a voluntary organisation of female beef farmers, founded by Devon beef producer Jilly Greed and NFU president Minette Batters. 

GBBW is backed by the entire industry and will feature on pack, in-store promotion, on menu, as well as in the media, on social and in a number of fundraising consumer events for the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution RABI.

Environmental sustainability is the core theme for this year’s campaign, once again supported and underpinned by evidence and data from AHDB. The aim is to highlight how British beef farmers work tirelessly to produce some of the most sustainable beef in the world.  Real-life farm stories and info graphics will be central in sharing the facts about British beef production and its positive environmental credentials.

Jilly explains, “Great British Beef Week is all about giving our UK beef farmers the opportunity to share their stories and showcase the work they do to produce such an exceptional nutritious product.

‘Britain has the perfect climate conditions, with plentiful rain and sunshine to nurture our pastures, valleys and moorland, enabling us to produce beef sustainably, with a carbon footprint half the global average. Our grass-based beef production creates biodiversity of plants, herbal leys and wildlife, supports forests, hedgerows and marshes, enabling more carbon to be absorbed into the soil from the atmosphere than any other UK habitat.

“It really is fantastic to see the British beef industry coming together to celebrate our environmentally sustainable beef, world renowned for its great taste, quality and nutritional benefits including vitamin B12, iron and protein.’
