Farm Walk (Oxfordshire) : Soil Farmer of the Year

Join us on the 11th July for a guided farm walk with 2019 Soil Farmer of the Year winner Julian Gold around his farm.

Hill Farm, St Marys Road, East Hendred, Wantage, Oxon, OX12 8LF

6pm – 9pm 11/07/2019

The inagural national Soil farmer of the Year competition aimed to find the best farmers and growers who were engaged with and passionate about managing their soils in a way that supports productive agriculture, biodiversity, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and builds soil organic matter and carbon. Soil underpins the entire farming system. A healthy well-managed soil rich in organic matter will support productive and healthy crops and pasture, which in turn supports a profitable and resilient farming system.

Farm info: Julian runs a 751 ha farm with a medium silty clay loam soil in Oxfordshire. He grows a variety of arable crops on a controlled traffic system with sheep grazing cover crops and permanent pasture on-farm. The overarching aim for the business is to maximise carbon on the farm, through maximising photosynthesis of the growing crops, minimising compaction and adapting drilling to protect the soil.  Julian is also involved with different on-farm research looking at understanding soil health metrics and the emissions from applying different levels and rates of inputs.

The walks are totally free to attend and are open to everyone, but for catering purposes it helps if you can book a place.
