The effective and appropriate use of antibiotics (antibiotic stewardship) is key to tackling the global epidemic of antimicrobial resistance and ensure a sustainable supply of antibiotics are available for when needed.
In November of 2018 the Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture (RUMA) Targets Task Force published their second annual report on impact made across the agriculture sector since its inception in 2016.
The report demonstrated significant progress through a wide range of activities which have led to the sector making huge strides on the reduction of antibiotic usage.
These activities include cross-sector campaigns and training initiatives. Within the Food Supply sector there is much more work to be done, however, several Retailers and Food Chains have begun work to reduce antibiotic usage across their supply chain and some progress has been made.
Therefore, we know action is already taking place across a wide range of human and animal sectors in the UK – but what more can we do across the sectors to help achieve the step change needed? What role can technology play in meeting targets? And what are the risks and rewards?
Building on the inaugural Conference which took place on October 4th 2018, this roadshow series will:
- Bring together stakeholders across all sectors under the One Health agenda, but especially the food supply chain, to explore what now needs to happen, and how, to obtain the level of containment and reduction in antimicrobial resistance required.
- Consider how different ongoing or new initiatives such as innovation across human health, animal health and the food supply chain can inform each other or work in synergy.
- Identify what barriers persist and which opportunities remain unrecognised, and how we can resolve these.
Delegates will hear from leaders in human and animal medicine, regulators and policy-makers about how far we have come and how much further we can and should go. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of the latest thinking on antibiotic use and AMR, and a clear picture of the role and opportunities for their businesses.
Innovation for Agriculture's Richard Lloyd will be speaking at the event, at 15:00 during session 3 - which looks at ground level approaches to improving stewardship in Animal Health, Agriculture & Food Supply. Richard will be speaking about data and sensor technology innovations in the dairy sector, and their roles in reducing antimicrobial resistance.
